Open the Door

Take a breath. You're here.

The wooden doors are heavy, like the way quality things used to be made. You notice that first. Then the scent — something faintly green, fresh, like a garden after rain. Candles flicker on the Italian marble counter.

Sounds transport you to a world you can explore at your own pace. It's probably French, or maybe it's even Taylor Swift — it changes with the mood and the weather and whether we feel like strolling in Paris, lunching in Capri, or electric of New York's SoHo.

The shelves are not organized the way a store is organized. They are organized the way a person's home is organized — by feeling, by color, by the quiet logic of things that belong near each other. Red to purple, just like a rainbow. Ben learned that from the merchant prince of America, Mickey Drexler.

There are glass trays that first catch your eye as they sparkle so much, they're so clean — then you or your friend will chuckle at a clever idiom, or stop, or think of someone you haven't called in too long.

You were not planning to stay this long.
That is the whole idea.

Inside Ben's Garden
The Post Office on the Village Green, Stony Brook

The North Shore

Where everything began.

The flagship sits on Main Street, facing the harbor of Long Island Sound, and feels familiar — you know you won't get lost here. A stretch of the North Shore Gold Coast that inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald's fabled stories of estates and evening candlelight parties. You'll be surprised to witness the smiling faces and friendly people waving to one another — like a time past.

At the center of the crescent-shaped collection of boutiques, specialty coffee shops (for the perfect matcha), and fashionable clothing stores sits the formidable and stately Post Office. The eagle nested above the wood Corinthian columns and cupola flaps his wooden wings every hour on the hour, watching over the harbor, as he has since Ward Melville put him there 75 years ago.

Gallery North, the notable independent art gallery that celebrates emerging artists from New York — also where a fourteen-year-old Ben once stood behind a folding table selling pressed-flower cards — is around the corner.

He opened the store here because this is where it started. This is home — at 42 years old now — his family home, his mother, his brother. The garden that gave the whole thing its name grew half a mile from where you're standing. The sun shines brightly, comforting you. The windows face west, so the afternoon light does something to the glass trays that no photograph has ever captured.

What You'll Find

Objects, stories, and a world to explore.

Objects on display at Ben's Garden

The Collection

Objects Worth Keeping.

Everything is made by hand. Many with Ben's own two hands. You'll find anything and everything to make a house a home. Ben's signature collection of decoupage, stationery (Ben loves notepads to write his lists, and thoughtful cards to keep up with family and friends), tabletop photo frames to keep memories near, and scented candles.

You'll find one-of-a-kind furniture collected from Ben's trips to Paris and Belgium. Objects for the garden, and pottery made in Massachusetts and planted with real moss — so the pots look like they're from an old English countryside manor.

Custom Decoupage

Something Made Just for You.

Bring a wedding invitation. A map of the town where you fell in love. Your grandmother's recipe card — you'll find Ben's grandmother's peanut butter cookie recipe card on the front counter; they are that delicious, too.

We'll turn it into a one-of-a-kind glass tray — designed by Ben, crafted by hand in New York City. When people pick up their completed pieces, they tear up. The sentiment of something so personal made into a treasure is a great gift. That's not an exaggeration.

For Your Walls

If These Walls Could Speak.

A blank wall is a blank canvas. We can help with that.

Ben loves maps. You'll find his Long Island map — enlarged from an original 1873 specimen found in an antique book, hand-embellished with oil paints so it looks like something pulled from a quiet corner of a French antique shop. It charts Long Island's roadways, harbors, and towns with astonishing precision, recording the shoreline as it existed before Nassau County. Framed in Italian olive-wood veneer rubbed with beeswax.

The Cartier Heart Strings start as an original drawing in black on cream paper. Then the gilding begins — each heart filled by hand with 18K gold and platinum silver leaf, crisp edges, luminous depth. It shimmers when the light moves.

Symbols of love, victory, and devotion — Ben's felt pennant flags are celebratory, made of wool, cut and sewn by hand. Every stitch honors the early American makers and the essence of what they are announcing: Dog Person. Raise Hell Kid. You'll Think of Something. Great Minds Overthink Alike. In our world, your home says who you are, how you feel, and what you think.

The Playlist.

Sound is one of the five senses — how do people forget how important sound is? Every Ben's Garden store has a feeling, a pulse, a vibe, and a soundtrack. Late at night, in the car, on his way into New York, or on the plane from Paris, Ben collects songs like some people collect stamps. It's a constant exercise in discovery, mood, and wanting to feel good that requires constant care — the way someone else might tend a garden.

The vibe is that fun friend who's eclectic, exciting, a little impatient, but always has a hysterical story to share that makes you fall off a chair — all the while with a drink in hand.

Some Saturdays it's the kind of thing that makes a stranger stop in the doorway and ask what's playing. Now you can listen from the convenience of your sound system at home, your MacBook, or in the car. Thank you, Spotify.

Always Something New

Come in. Say hello. Stay awhile.

There is always something new. A new delivery unpacked late the previous evening — you're the first to discover. A new favorite candle he's obsessed with that reminds him. More songs added to the playlist that we can't play enough on repeat and need you to hear.

The Swedish candy in the apothecary jars by the register has been diligently refilled — we take our sweets and being sweet equally seriously. There are treats behind the counter for your dog that are vegan and organic (because we love pets as much as people), and we will absolutely ask to pet them if you let us.

Come in. Say hello. Stay awhile. Tell us how your day is going. Discover something you didn't know you were looking for. That's what Main Street used to be, and in Stony Brook it still is.
